A dreamy matinee idol in his early days, Robert Wagner has been rediscovered by moviegoers worldwide, thanks to the Austin Powers films. Now, he's back as Number Two, the faithful second-in-command to Dr. Evil (Mike Myers) in Austin Powers in Goldmember. And yes, he's still wearing that campy, pirate-like eyepatch.
"I spent a lot of time in the eye patch, making it feel very natural and part of me," Wagner grins to TV Guide Online. "I didn't go out in the supermarket or drive cars with it, but I kept it on a lot so I got familiar with it."
In Goldmember, Wagner pokes fun at Hollywood by founding an evil talent agency for his boss. "I've always had a lot of ideas for Dr. Evil," he says, "to maintain him in the style to which he's accustomed, so that he has funds at all times to run his empire. I always have a back up plan!"
Speaking of Plan B, Wagner reveals that Number Two's original gag business idea hit the cutting room floor. "What's going to be on the DVD is that I was going to put Dr. Evil into llamas which are the hardiest animal there is alive. So I was going to present that to him. My one good eye is always watching out for him."
Sadly, nostalgic TV fans shouldn't watch for any more reunions of Hart to Hart Wagner's husband-wife mystery series with Stephanie Powers. "The pilot was in '78 and we were on five years," he recalls. "Then, we made six Hart to Hart two-hour movies. That's enough.
"Lionel Stander who played Max the butler passed away," Wagner adds. "He was a big contributor to it. We were very close friends. In fact, his daughter is getting married and I'm going to give her away!"
