FAREWELL, MRS. ROBINSON Legendary actress Anne Bancroft, forever known as Dustin Hoffman's middle-aged seductress in 1967's The Graduate, died Monday in New York of uterine cancer. She was 73. Bancroft earned five Oscar nominations during her storied career; she won for her role as Helen Keller's teacher in 1962's The Miracle Worker. Bancroft also made her mark on Broadway, winning back-to-back Tonys for the stage version of Miracle Worker and Two for the Seesaw opposite Henry Fonda. "Her combination of brains, humor, frankness and sense were unlike any other artist," said Graduate director Mike Nichols. "Her beauty was constantly shifting with her roles, and because she was a consummate actress, she changed radically for every part." Bancroft is survived by her husband, filmmaker Mel Brooks. |
