SHORTER TODAY
It looks like Katie Couric and Matt Lauer are being pulled off Today's "late" shift. According to the New York Post, NBC is planning to revamp the third hour of the Today show, complete with different hosts and a whole new look. "It will be like a different show to keep up with Regis and Kelly and other shows, but it will still be called Today," an insider tells the paper. The extra hour has reportedly been a "nightmare" for Couric and Lauer, who will continue to helm the first two hours alongside Ann Curry and Al Roker. The move comes as Good Morning America threatens to overtake Today as TV's most-watched morning show. An NBC rep denies that there are changes planned for the third hour.
OUTSIDERS REVISITED
Warner Bros. has announced plans to re-release a special expanded edition of the Brat Pack classic The Outsiders in theaters on Sept. 9, Variety reports. Director Francis Ford Coppola has added 22 minutes of never-before-seen footage including a new beginning and ending. The special edition will also be available on DVD beginning Sept. 20 under the name The Outsiders: The Complete Novel. Wait, we don't have to read anything, do we?
RACE RIOT
Scrubs star Donald Faison has signed on to star in the indie comedy Homie Spumoni, per The Hollywood Reporter. The story centers on a black man (Faison) who is raised as an Italian-American and unaware that he is black — that is, until his birth parents show up. Sopranos ingenue Jamie-Lynn DiScala will play his girlfriend.
STAR PERFORMER
It's official: ABC's Dancing with the Stars is a summer smash. Wednesday's episode attracted nearly 15 million viewers, up 1.4 million from last week's boffo bow. Maybe now the judges can cut poor Kelly Monaco some freakin' slack!
MORE PRETTY PEOPLE
VH1 has ordered a 10-episode reality series that will take viewers behind-the-scenes of the Wilhelmina modeling agency. The show — titled The Agency — will focus on Wilhelmina's booking agents as opposed to the models themselves. Unless the booking agents turn out to be really ugly.
DON'T SAVE THE DATE
For the six of you who are still watching Britney and Kevin: Chaotic, next Tuesday's season finale will feature the world premiere of Spears' video for her new single "Someday (I Will Understand)." The rest of you can just forget you ever read this.
TOMKAT UPDATE
Katie Holmes has fallen further under Tom Cruise's spell. Per the New York Post, Holmes has dropped her agent and manager in favor of Cruise's representatives. Dawson — do something!
GOOD SPORT
Friends star-turned-Hanes sell-out Matthew Perry has been tapped to host the 2005 ESPY Awards, airing July 17 on ESPN. What connection does Perry have to the sports world, you ask? Turns out he was a nationally ranked tennis player in his native Canada. That still doesn't explain the Hanes thing.
