Kyle XY Returns with Big Answers, and More Questions
In the first season of ABC Family's Kyle XY, the question was, "Who is Kyle?" When the second season debuts on June 11, we find out — but the answer only deepens the show's mystery. Viewers may be befuddled, but producers promise they're not jerking us around. "We wanted to make sure we didn't dangle unanswerable questions for too long," says writer and producer Julie Plec. "Everything's been leading up to [what] we learn in the first episode of the second season, and explaining precisely who Kyle XY is and where he came from." Last summer we met Kyle (Matt Dallas), the weird, wide-eyed teen who awoke in the forest buck naked and covered in pink goo, with no memory and no navel. After Kyle was taken to a juvenile hall, Nicole Trager (Marguerite MacIntyre), the psychologist assigned to his case, brought him home to her family, who were baffled by Kyle's peculiar behavior. At first he barely spoke, had no concept of time and no understanding of feelings like hunger and thirst. What he did have was an encyclopedic brain, an instant aptitude for foreign languages, and superhuman athletic ability. This season Kyle "will continue to physically develop," Plec says. "Last year when he tried to use his superhearing, it actually [gave him] a seizure. A lot of this season will be about him trying to figure out how he can expand his abilities without causing physical damage." There are also threats to Kyle's adopted family. "We bring the danger and mystery of Kyle through the front door of the Tragers' house," says the 24-year-old Dallas, taking a break in the late-spring sunshine on the show's Vancouver set. Dallas, dressed entirely in burglar black, just finished a scene in which he breaks into the offices of a sinister secret organization to find out who's been stalking him. "Everybody gets caught up in it, and we start to see the relationships and dynamics of the family really be affected by these people who are after Kyle. Stories get heavier, plots get thicker, relationships strengthen. [But] he still has that Kyle-ism about him. The world is still new to him." Also new to him is Jessi XX, who appears much the way Kyle did — naked, goo-covered, but with a not-so-friendly mission. Jaimie Alexander, 23, who plays Jessi, can't reveal much, but does confirm, "I'm definitely going to be shaking things up. Jessi is the dark cloud hanging over the show, but in a good way." Jessi shares some of the same unearthly powers and features of her XY counterpart, including no navel, and Alexander says she's more than happy to bare her belly to curious fans. "If that makes people smile, I'll do it." Even on ABC Family, XX sells. Let our Online Video Guide show you some Kyle XY clips. Send your comments on this guest column to letters@tvguide.com. |
Big Love Preview: Barb Will Pay for Her Polygamy!
HBO's Big Love went out with a big bang last season, when First Wife Barb was unceremoniously exposed as a polygamist at Utah's Mother of the Year ceremony. As the second season begins (tonight at 9 pm/ET), we asked Jeanne Tripplehorn about Barb now coming unglued. TV Guide: Is this the beginning of the end for the Henricksons? Tripplehorn: No, but everybody's sort of in disarray. The other wives are really concerned about Barb. She knows she put her family in jeopardy out of vanity, and she's paying for it. The family sort of blows apart for a little bit. TV Guide: The show's premise is decidedly out of the mainstream, not to mention illegal. Yet these characters earn our sympathy. Tripplehorn: It's [executive producers] Mark [V. Olsen] and Will [Scheffer]. They adore these characters, and they want to make sure the audience understands them, their motives and who they are. The Henricksons are incredibly spiritual, and like the title says, they have a lot of love. TV Guide: So the theme didn't turn you off? Tripplehorn: No, I thought it was great. When they gave me the role, I started laughing, and I said, "Just when you thought you'd seen it all on TV." TV Guide: The wives seem to serve different purposes. Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) has a childlike innocence, while Nicki (Chloe Sevigny) has a connection to power. But is Barb Bill's one true love? Tripplehorn: Exactly. She's his soul mate. If she hadn't gone through cancer, they definitely would not be in a polygamist relationship. Bill was having money problems and Barb was dying, so they went back to the compound to lick their wounds and get back on their feet, and that's when Nicki came into the picture. But it all spun out of control, because Barb lived. TV Guide: You've played in films opposite Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner, Hugh Grant. So how does Bill Paxton measure up? Tripplehorn: Well, he's an incredible dancing partner. I have a smile on my face every day I go to work, and he's a huge part of that. We have a nice shorthand because we're from the same part of the country: He comes from Texas, I'm from Oklahoma. He has an understanding of where we come from and who we are. TV Guide: Any plans for Bill to add another wife this season? Tripplehorn: I don't know. TV Guide: You mean if you told me, you'd have to kill me? Tripplehorn: Exactly. I don't know. A Quick Look at Style Network's Finola Hughes
Fear not, fashion disasters! Finola Hughes is intent on making the world a prettier place one wardrobe at a time as the host of Style Network's upbeat makeover series How Do I Look? (new episodes air Monday at 9 pm/ET). Here, host and sartorial stunner Finola Hughes reveals her secret for keeping her composure, and admits to some of her own style missteps. TV Guide: How do you keep a straight face with Look's pre-makeover messes?Hughes: Well, I take a deep breath. [Laughs] I think every person who comes on has a tremendous desire to change. Once we show them where their [errors] come from, it sort of liberates them in a way. TV Guide: After seven seasons, who's tougher to fix — men or women? Hughes: Oh, the guys are pushovers! They're just happy if they look showered. [Laughs] TV Guide: Is there anything in your wardrobe that you're ashamed of? Hughes: Definitely! I don't wear them, but I keep them in a box. All I can say is that they contain spandex and shiny material. TV Guide: Did you know at the time that Staying Alive would be such a hoot? Hughes: We were shooting [director] Sly Stallone's little nod to Hitchcock where Sly bumps into Tony Manero [John Travolta] walking down the street... and he's wearing a full-on yeti fur coat! I was fresh out of punk London at the time and thought, "Huh, this is pretty camp." [Laughs] But I never thought it would be the sort of guilty pleasure it is now.
