I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

"Scream" screenwriter Kevin Williamson takes a stab at writing a straight slasher flick and hits his target audience: teens and twentysomethings. Teenagers Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe accidentally run a man over and, panicking, dump the body in the drink. Big mistake. Soon they're being hunted by a ghostly figure with a hook in his hand. There's no new bloody ground broken here, but the film is exceptionally well done and contains some genuine jolts. Despite an utterly predictable outcome and a shameless, obligatory sequel setup (for 1998's "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer"), horror fans will no doubt be "hooked" into watching.
